This week’s Brown Bag was focused on Pirate Metrics and how to use them as the building blocks for actionable metrics.

Pirate Metrics was coined by angel investor and 500 Startups founder, Dave McClure. It refers to the acronym AARRR and when said with one side of your face looking like it’s in pain, in a Pirate-y sounding voice, you’ll understand how it got its name.

AARRR stands for:

Acquisition
Activation
Retention
Referral
Revenue

I’m a huge advocate for using Pirate Mirates as a framework to build out your actionable metrics. Remember, actionable metrics tie your results with specific and repeatable actions. They give you insights that you can base decisions on. Vanity metrics are the opposite. They sound good, but they don’t give you any usable insights.

There are much better blog posts on this topic, so make sure you read them.
